The Lost Love Songs of Boysie Singh

Persaud builds her second novel around four women — Rosie, Popo, Mana Lala, and Doris — whose lives orbit the real-life 1950s Trinidadian gangster of the title, using each woman's distinct vernacular voice to keep the men-behind-the-myth structure from flattening into one register. Critics credited the novel's atmosphere and its refusal to romanticize the women's proximity to Singh's violence, praising the specificity of place and shifting patois as real achievements. But more than one review found the four-part structure works against the book at length: without a tighter throughline across 500-plus pages, incidents accumulate rather than build, so a novel rich in individual scenes and social texture never quite resolves into a single satisfying arc.
