The Horse

Winegard's thesis is that no animal shaped human history as thoroughly as the horse, and he marshals genetics, archaeology, and military history to back it, tracing everything from Bronze Age chariot warfare to the mounted empires of the steppe. The book is at its best in these direct stretches, when it stays on the animal itself and its documented effects on trade, conquest, and social hierarchy. It sprawls, though: long digressions into tangentially related cultural history dilute the throughline, and more than one reviewer of Winegard's prior books noted the same pattern of a strong core argument diffused by excess material that a tighter edit would have cut. The result is a genuinely informative history that asks more patience of the reader than its subject strictly requires.
