Reviewers have flagged real repetition and bloat, chapters that restate the same point three or four times as if building emotional weight rather than evidence, and a structural mismatch between Twain's improvisational, aphoristic sensibility and Chernow's linear narrative machinery. The research is undeniable; what's less clear is whether sheer comprehensiveness substitutes for a controlling insight into what made Twain's voice work on the page.
