Quinn's target is the idea of an unbroken Western civilizational lineage running from Greece to Rome to Europe, and she dismantles it by tracing how much of what became 'Western' actually arrived from Babylonian law, Phoenician seafaring technology, Assyrian irrigation systems, and Arabic scholarship. The book's four-thousand-year span is its strength and its strain: the range lets her show contact and borrowing at nearly every turn, but the sheer scope means some regions get treated more as supporting evidence for her thesis than as subjects in their own right. She is less concerned with dethroning any single civilization than with showing that "civilization" as a bounded, self-contained unit was always a retrospective invention. It reads best as a corrective essay expanded to book length rather than as an introductory world history.
