Get the Picture

Bosker embeds herself among gallerists, art handlers, and collectors the way she previously infiltrated the wine world in Cork Dork, treating the contemporary art market less as an aesthetic system than as a closed subculture with its own status games and coded language. The book gets its comedy from that outsider vantage, mining the art world's jargon and self-seriousness for material, while still taking seriously her stated goal of learning to actually see. Limiting her focus mostly to New York keeps the reporting tight but also narrows the argument, since the book says less about how art functions outside the market's most rarefied tier. Where it falls short is the ending, arriving at a personal answer to "how do I see art" that feels smaller than the exuberant chaos of the journey getting there.
